Ebagos baskets are made from a strong rattan called red rattan (beni-to).
Red rattan is a hard and durable material, so much so that it's soaked in water for 24 hours to soften it. It's said to be the strongest of the approximately 300 types of rattan.
Since it's a natural material, the thickness varies. Each strand also differs in color. It may be entirely darkened, or tinged with orange or red, and sometimes has spot-like patterns. Another characteristic is that as time passes, the outer layer peels off and it changes to a beautiful color.
